The Elly Report: Candidates Corner Kevin Scott to Run for US Senate vs Senator Ted Kennedy in 2006First I should start off with what I am not. I am not a lawyer and I am not a millionaire. It is a known fact that the majority of senators are attorneys, and most are millionaires, but does the U.S. Senate have to remain a private elite club of super-rich aristocrats that excludes regular citizens? If you support my candidacy, then you are supporting the belief that America is full of decent well-informed people who are perfectly qualified to represent the people of our country in Washington. What I am is a moderate Republican who has been elected twice to public office, understands the system well, and looks forward to working as hard as possible to get the support of my fellow citizens of Massachusetts. If we start to elect common, decent people to the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, then the first words of our constitution, "We the people," will have greater meaning, and we will truly begin to put an end to the way things are currently done in Washington. I believe that I am simply one of many of people here in the state of Massachusetts that is perfectly capable of representing the citizens of Massachusetts far better than our current "career politicians." The reason for that is that people like myself simply don't owe any favors, and if elected will spend a lot more time talking to the people who voted us into office, instead of one of those representatives of the multi-billion dollar lobbyist industry, that often seems to control our government more than our own citizens. My background: I am 41 years old and have 20 years of successful small business ownership, first in my 20's as the owner of a successful automotive reconditioning service for 10 years, and then as the owner of a successful technical recruiting company for 9 years. Most economists agree that small business is the engine behind 80% of all growth in the American economy, and I am confident that my ability to understand the challenges of small business will mean that the small business people of Massachusetts will have a Senator that understands their problems and needs from hands-on, personal experience. I also have attained over 6 years experience as a local elected official, both as a Selectman and Board of Public Works member in my hometown of Wakefield, where I have been a lifelong citizen. I have also spent many thousands of hours volunteering my time to make Massachusetts a better place to live (as many others have). Memberships include: The Concord Coalition, several civic groups, and more recently an assertive promoter of a statewide Rail-To-Trail network in Massachusetts. Rail-To-Trail duties include my chairmanship of the Wakefield Rail-To-Trail Committee, and constant contact with the State Legislature. Twelve years ago I earned a Business Management degree from Newbury College, and have also recently completed my B.S. in Political Science with honors at University of Massachusetts Boston. Outside of the world of colleges and universities, I am a fanatical reader of almost anything political or historical. The three areas I am most interested in are: Political Theory/History, Economics, and Theology. I also speak and read functional Russian, with the desire to develop my Russian skills to full fluency. I aspire to utilize my language skills to improve relations between the U.S. and Russia in order to help both countries eliminate unnecessary weapons of mass destruction and fight the war on terror. My question to you is: Can you be one of the essential people to get this campaign 100 certified signatures when I pull papers to oppose Ted Kennedy on February 14, 2006?
